She Didn't Choose This Life.
But You Can Change It.
Imagine being five years old, standing before a magistrate's court — not because you did something wrong, but because the world failed you. No mother. No father. Nowhere safe to sleep.
The girls who come to Vishaka arrive through Sri Lanka's court system — orphaned by loss, abandoned by circumstance, or removed from homes where abuse and neglect had stolen their childhood. They arrive frightened, often traumatised, carrying wounds invisible to the eye.
Since 1952, Vishaka Child Development Centre in Kalutara has been their sanctuary. More than just a shelter — it is a family. A dedicated resident matron becomes their "Amma" (mother). Teachers support them through school. Counsellors tend to their invisible scars. And slowly, one day at a time, they begin to heal.
Many of these girls go on to sit their A/Level examinations, enter university, and become independent, compassionate citizens. But none of it is possible without continuous support — food, clothes, sanitary needs, books, and above all, a safe roof overhead.
